Shiell Residence
The Project was completed as a collaboration between Craig M. Hammond, Assoc. AIA, Design Director at Hammond Habitat Design Studio and Architect Lance C. O’Donnell, AIA, Principal of o2 Architecture.
The Shiell Residence was purchased in 2013 by an avid art collector to showcase a diverse collection of paintings and provide a respite from busy Los Angeles. The owner, also an enthusiast of mid-century Architecture, was drawn to this Alexander home located in the Old Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs, CA. The original purity of this home and intended connection to the indoor/outdoor relationships had been lost with additions under the original eaves on the North and South sides of this home.
Many of the original architectural features were also altered or removed. The directive of this project was to selectively remodel and restore the home for seasonal desert living, and keeping to the original mid-century design intent as a goal.
The scope of work included remodeling Kitchen, Living Room, Bedrooms, and Bathrooms. Removal of addition between Dining Room and Garage, and adding clearstory windows on West side of home to match existing clearstory windows on East side of home were top priorities. Remodel of carport which had been converted to a Garage was also completed. Additional, selective remodeling, took place in the Entry Foyer, Driveway, Yard, and Pool area of site.
